On the job front…

30 08 2008

I’ve written off suitor #1, as the positions they want me to consider are no longer with their little start-up that I’d liked so much. For the right job I’m willing to go just about anywhere but for more of the same I’m not interested in relocating anywhere not on my list.

Suitor #2 scheduled a follow-up for last week, but they’d neglected to tell me in advance that it was because they had lost the notes from our first conversation. Disproving the saying that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. This time they hit me with a bunch of lame trivia questions and classic interview BS but overall I think it went much better the second time around and I am much more interested in them than I was after our initial interview. Unfortunately, they just entered a “soft” hiring freeze period. I don’t know what the heck that really means but it sets off alarm bells in my head.

On the inside front, I was approached by the hiring manager for a position that I hadn’t previously considered. Looks like a good opportunity to pick up some new, marketable skills. Internal hiring tends to move pretty quick so I should know within a week or two.

Riding, riding, riding…

30 08 2008

My commuting tally for the past four weeks is 11 days on the motorcycle, 8 days in the car, and one day of telecommuting. Lots of threatening weather over the past two weeks prevented me from riding more but I did manage to get a few days in. MPG have fallen to around 33 as I’ve become more comfortable maintaining higher speeds.

I’m itching to do a road trip somewhere. Still mulling over a destination. And questioning how others are able to use this motorcycle for serious touring when the saddle bags are so danged small.

Some locals are organizing rides for Sunday and Monday so I’ll probably get a few hundred miles in this weekend.

That Song

15 08 2008

One of the things about living abroad is that you get exposed to new music. I’m a big fan of the seemingly extinct genre that my friends call “Booty Music” — Quad City DJs, 12 Gauge, etc. One day I was watching Viva and saw this music video:

For over a year I tried to find this album with no success. Now it’s on YouTube and I can buy the track from Napster for $0.99. I love the Internet.

(If you’re interested in more German rap / hip hop, I highly recommend Deichkind and DJ Tomekk)

Wired for Sound

13 08 2008

Received an iPod Shuffle as a gift the other day. My first thought was to regift it but the usual recipients of my unwanted junk probably wouldn’t want it any more than I did.

Then it occured to me that the Shuffle is perfect for a motorcycle. It cost me nothing and is cheap to replace so losing or breaking it is of little concern. The risk of losing it is actually pretty low — if it falls it will probably stay attached to the cord. It’s vibration-proof. And best of all, with no screen to look at there is nothing to take my eyes off of the road.

So I began my quest to get sound into my helmet without buying anything. Apple’s earbuds don’t like to stay in my ears, which leads to painful helmet removal. My fancy Shure headphones stay in but they are so effective at blocking outside sounds that they shouldn’t be used while walking, much less driving. Ripping apart a set of over-the-ear headphones and putting the speakers in my helmet’s liner seemed like the best bet. The first pair I tried had speakers far too thick for comfort but the second set was just about perfect. Not quite loud enough for the most comfortable behind-the-ears position, but against my ears they are reasonably comfortable and just loud enough for highway driving.

:)

The IBM PC was launched on August 12th, 1981. Virtually every modern computer still has pieces of the original PC’s DNA.
